After breakfast depart for an excursion to the Irazú Volcano. Dominating the skyline of the city of Cartago, southwest of San José, is located at 11259.84 ft of altitude (3.432m); the route to the Irazu cross fertile agricultural areas of Costa Rica, where soils have been enriched by volcanic ash. The paved road ends a few hundred meters before the summit, there are trails that lead up to the crater. Because of its altitude, the summit of Irazu is often overlooked, towering above the clouds. In the midst of this wild landscape, vegetation begins to sprout only after the period of violent activity that took the volcano between 1962 and 1965. Have lunch at a restaurant in Orosi, with typical dishes of Costa Rica. In the afternoon visit the Lankester Gardens, the city of Cartago and the cathedral of Virgen de Los Ángeles (Our Lady of the Angels). Return to San Jose. Overnight at the hotel.

 

Day 3 San José/ Poás Volcano National Park/ La Paz Waterfalls Gardens/San José
1h45 road trip from San José to Poás Volcano

After breakfast, depart on an excursion to Poás Volcano. The Poás Volcano is one of the actives volcanoes in the country with a height of 8874.67 ft high (2.705 m). At the top of the main crater discover the awesome power of a volcano. Down a muddy pond and bubbling sulfur. The steam escapes it is often confused with the clouds that cover the crater. Then, a path will take you to the second crater; this one is filled with cold water and is surrounded by lush vegetation. Lunch on arrival in La Paz Waterfall Gardens. Then visit this magnificent park, located between 4429.13 ft ant 4921.26 ft (1,350/1,500 m) of altitude and from where you can watch a series of waterfalls, a butterfly farm and hummingbird. Return to San Jose.

1h30’ road trip from San José to Carara

Tip: Visit the Carara National Park, Carara Biological Reserve is a first approach to tropical forest. You may see along accessible trails, plants and animals from both the rainforest and dry forest. Monkeys, sloths, anteaters, crocodiles, iguanas, poison dart frogs, thousands of butterflies are some examples of wildlife that can see. Dozens of species of birds including the scarlet macaw, make Carara Reserve a privileged place for and amateur ornithologists.

1h00 road trip from Carara to Manuel Antonio

Breakfast and then departure to Manuel Antonio. This trendy beach offers within its National Park, some of the most beautiful beaches in the country. Many hotels, restaurants and bars have stunning views over the Park and the Pacific Ocean. The cornice of Manuel Antonio, the town and the port of Quepos are some of the major tourist sites in Costa Rica. The spectacular Manuel Antonio National Park, harmoniously combining the possibility of sea bathing in the warm and limpid waters of the Pacific and walks in the rainforest surrounded by 3 beautiful beaches of white sand. Trails allow you to reach the rocky outcrop overlooking the beach. Manuel Antonio is undoubtedly one of the most accessible of Costa Rica, to observe wildlife, including sloths, raccoons, coatis, capuchin monkeys and squirrel monkeys.
