Drake, Osa Peninsula

An unspoiled tropical forest and the rugged natural beauty of the Osa Peninsula make of this region the most beautiful in Costa Rica. It was declared one of the most biologically intense places on Earth by National Geographic^®, Osa Peninsula, along with Drake Bay, have become the first eco-tourism destination in Costa Rica. Drake is a pristine bay, with lush vegetation, north of the Osa Peninsula, about 20 km from the entrance to the Corcovado National Park. It takes its name from the pirate Sir Francis Drake, and it is believed that in the 17^thcentury the dreadful pirate hid there one of his most precious treasures.

Away from the main road, Drake can only be reached by land during the dry season. The sea and the Sierpe River, with an efficient boat service, and a small airstrip are the only means of communication during the rainy season. Here you will find many luxury lodges, fishing camps and some of the most remote and spectacular Ecological hotels of Costa Rica.

From here you can take a diving day trip to the wonderful Caño Island or you can go sea kayaking or enjoy a sport fishing tour; take a tour to watch dolphins and whales or just relax on the beach and sunbathe. For the more adventurous ones, there is a night tour which will explain and inform about the fascinating fauna since it is home to many strange animals and endangered species including the puma, the jaguar, the harpy eagle and the scarlet macaw.
